What decides whether an umbrella lasts: the ribs

Few corporate gifts are seen from so far away: branded umbrellas go out every time it rains and put your logo at everyone’s eye level. The catch is that they must not flip inside out with the first gust, because a broken umbrella is a poor memory of your brand all winter.

That is why it makes sense to check the frame before the fabric. Fibreglass ribs flex in the wind and spring back into shape; thin steel ribs stay bent. Eight ribs spread the tension better than six, and windproof or storm umbrellas add a reinforced frame or a double canopy that lets the gust through. For fabric, pongee polyester and recycled PET are the usual choices: the first has a soft feel and the second adds an environmental angle. Also check the mechanism: on folding umbrellas, automatic opening and closing let you use it with one hand when getting into a car or a building.

How many panels to print and with which technique

An umbrella has eight panels or more, but printing one or two is enough: the logo is visible from the front and the back, and the umbrella still looks like an umbrella rather than a billboard. Printing all the panels makes the order more expensive and rarely improves the result. The price on each product page includes one-colour branding in the standard area, usually one panel; extra panels, extra colours or another technique are quoted in the quote.

Screen printing is the standard technique for logos in one or two solid colours: dependable and long-lasting on fabric. Digital transfer works for full-colour logos or gradients. And on wooden or bamboo handles, discreet laser engraving finishes the set nicely. Whatever the technique, you see the logo positioned on the panel in the free mock-up before you pay.

What can be customised

• The fabric colour, within the options each model offers: black and navy are the most understated, and there are models in bright colours or with a different-coloured interior.
